Hackers aligned with the global cyber-collective known as Anonymous have claimed responsibility for taking down at least six prominent websites, including those of the US Department of Justice and Universal Music Group, in retaliation for charges levied earlier Thursday against content-sharing site Megaupload.com.

"The government takes down Megaupload? 15 minutes later Anonymous takes down government & record label sites," the group said.

Both Universalmusic.com and Justice.gov crashed on Thursday afternoon and the group also said it brought down the websites of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the US Copyright Office and the Utah Chiefs of Police Association

The proposed legislation would crack down on the online sharing of pirated copies of music, movies and other material.

Investigators said there was no connection between arrests in their two-year investigation of Megaupload.com and the political firestorm that erupted this week over the pending vote on SOPA, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The only living artist that really works and should never be pirated is TONY BENNETT!! 85 years old and still giving it all he has. The young ones make 2 or 3 crappy albums where the video matters more and expect to live the rest of their lives off that CRAP. NO WAY AND NO MORE BABY!!

CYBERWAR STARTS. I WILL share MY music which I HAVE BOUGHT WITH MY MONEY WITH WHO I PLEASE. This greed and stupidity will not go down as for every site they take down 10 more spring up. GOOD FOR THEM. Artists do not exist anymore an industry does. If they do they should work harder like everybody else. The idea of copyright is an oxymoron today!!
