Malta condems Israeli attack, demands inquiry

Malta has expressed regret for the loss of life during this morning's raid by Israeli commandos on an aid convoy of ships heading towards Gaza.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said that "Malta deeply regrets the loss of life as a result of the Israeli military operation against the flotilla sailing to Gaza and offers its condolences to the families of the victims. Malta condemns the disproportionate use of violence that has produced a very high number of victims among the members of the flotilla and demands a full inquiry into the attack."

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains a source of grave concern. We need to urgently achieve a durable solution to the situation in Gaza,” the Foreign Minsiter said.

The raid has been widely condemned, with many European countries calling in Israel's ambassadors to lodge protests. The US said it was looking into the circumstances leading to the Israeli action.
