Clashes between Libyan government forces and supporters of former leader Muammar Gaddaif in Bani Walid have resulted in the death of four people.

Armed forces officials said Pro-Gaddafi forces have taken control over Bani Walid in the south-east of Tripoli after clashes began after Gaddafi armed supporters were detained by National Transitional Council allies.

According to a spokesman of the local council in Bani Walid, around 100 to 150 heavily armed men are attacking the town forcing the local council to call for assistance by the army.

But the spokesman said that the defence ministry and NTC failed to provide any such assistance in the last pro-Gaddafi towns to fall in last year’s conflict.

Warnings of a civil war were made by Libya’s interim leader should the militias attacking towns remain armed.

Two people were killed and more than 40  injured in clashes earlier this month between rival militias in the town of Gharyan.
