Miracle escape for drummer who fell from balcony and impaled his head on a fence

A drunken party-goer who fell from a third flow balcony had his head impaled by a metal fence - and miraculously survived.

Nicholas Blossom, 21, the drummer of unsigned indie rock band Alaska Alaska, was said to be drunk and angry when he sat on a rooftop ledge at a party in Chelsea, New York, in the early hours of this morning.

Police said he sat alone screaming that he 'hated everybody' before falling one storey onto a fence, which was attached to the second-floor balcony of the adjacent apartment building.

Neighbours called the NYPD to report an emotionally disturbed person hollering from the roof before Blossom fell.

Rescuers used an electric saw to detach him - and a section of the railing was still attached to his scalp when he arrived at hospital.

But he survived surgery and was laughing and joking with his family from his intensive care bed, to the amazement of doctors.

His mother, Emily Blossom, said: 'He is out of surgery and making some jokes.

'The doctor tells us that he was very lucky.'
