Over 250 turned down honours from Queen

Author Roald Dahl and artist Lucian Freud among more than 250 people who turned down honours from the Queen.

According to official government records, more than 250 people turned honours from the Queen between 1951 and 1999, Press Association reported. These include author Roald Dahl, artist Lucian Freud, painters Francis Bacon and LS Lowry, sculptor Henry Moore and novelist Aldous Huxley.

The news agency also lists film director Alfred Hitchcock who turned down a CBE in 1962, but went on to accept a knighthood from the Queen four months before his death in 1980.

The information was obtained under Freedom of Information laws, as Cabinet Office was ordered to release the information by the Information Commissioner's Office.
