The Damascus suburbs previously held by rebel forces has been taken over by the Syrian army with large deployments of troops and tanks.

Activists said that one suburb, Saqba, was still under bombardment as of this morning.

At least 26 people were killed over the weekend during what activists are calling the most brutal fighting around the capital since the beginning of the 10-month long uprising.

The presence of the Free Syrian Army, made up of rebels, was said to have become less evident but are still said to be active.

A day after the suspension of the Arab League monitoring mission, activists said that around 60 people were killed across Syria on Sunday.

Members of the security forces have also been killed in large numbers with more than 50 military funerals held over the weekend as attacks on them become more violent.
