Increased number in Syria killings, UN to vote on draft resolution

The United Nations is expected to vote on a resolution backing an Arab League peace plan for Syria. The resolution calls on Syria’s president to hand power to a deputy.

The Security Council of the United Nations is expected to vote later on today on a resolution backing an Arab League peace plan for Syria.  The voting follows international media reports of more than 200 people killed by shelling in Homs.

The draft resolution calls on President Bashar al-Assad to hand power to a deputy to oversee a transition.

The Arab League has now turned on to the UN after al-Assad failed to upkeep an original agreement he had signed with the League. The government crackdown on protesters didn't stop, even when observers from the Arab League had visited the country.

According to the BCC, violent protests have broken out at several Syrian embassies.

About 20 protesters forced their way into the Syrian embassy in Berlin late on Friday and damaged offices, police said.

Around 150 demonstrators also gathered outside the Syrian embassy in London early on Saturday and five people were arrested after entering the building.

About 20 protesters forced their way into the Syrian embassy in Berlin, as rallies also broke out outside Syrian embassies in Cairo and Madrid. In Cairo, protesters stormed the building, smashing furniture and setting fire to parts of the building.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian forces were firing mortars into the district of Khalidiyya and reported that women and children were among more than 200 dead.
