25 freed Kogi Prison inmates rearrested in Nigeria
State officials re-arrest 25 inmates after a gun attack on state prisons in Nigeria freed 119 inmates awaiting trial.
Prison officials said that 25 out of the 119 freed inmates by gunmen were rearrested and a manhunt had been launched to find those remaining at large.
Following an attack on the Koton Karfe prisons in Nigeria’s Kogi State on Wednesday evening, 199 inmates were freed by gunmen suspected to be on a rescue mission.
Out of the 119 inmates freed, 25 were re-arrested according to prison officials and were among the 120 inmates awaiting trial.
Spokesperson of the Kogi State Command of Nigeria Prisons Service Hadiza Aminu said one prison warden had been killed by the gunmen who were initially suspected by the media to be part of the Boko Haram Sect.
Aminu said that the attack was done by a robbery organisation attempting to free colleagues who were among the inmates and not the Boko Haram who had no reason to attack the prison because none of its members where being detained.
The spokesperson added that convicted inmates had not left the prison and said a manhunt was launched to find the remaining escaped inmates.
