An Italian cruise ship with more than 1,000 people on board is without power following a fire.

The ship is from the same fleet as the Costa Concordia, which sank off the Italian coast in January, killing 32.

The Costa Allegra is adrift in the Indian Ocean, over 200 miles off the Seychelles, according to Lloyd's List.

The Italian coast guard said that the fire broke out near the generators but had now been put out. All those on board are safe, the coast guard says.

The Costa Allegra is familiar with Malta, having operated a number of trips from Valletta in the past few years.
