Wagga residents wait to return home after flood warnings
Wagga Wagga residents evacuated from homes after city’s embankment is tested by over-flooding and may have to wait another night until safety is ensured by officials.
Floodwaters continue to rise slowly in the inland city of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales (US) and thousands of residents are expected to spend another night away from home.
A 10.9 metre peak could have tested the city’s embankment and possibly caused major flooding of local properties and businesses.
SES deputy commissioner Diter Gescke said that around 9,000 residents were issued with evacuation orders although it appeared that central Wagga Wagga could be spared from major flooding.
But, Gescke said residents would not be able to return home until surveys were completed to ensure their safety after several properties around Wagga Wagga and New South Wales had experienced over-flooding.
