A Greek exit "incredibly weaken" the eurozone, Merkel said, leading to insecurity over who is next. Germany will do all it can to ensure Greece remains part of the euro, she said.

She also calmed fears of further bailouts for eurozone countries, saying important lessons had been learned, though she said countries that have become used to spending more than they earned had to be more careful to live within their means.

And she applauded the UK government's austerity programme, saying "no country can live beyond its means".

Greece recently won approval for a second bailout of €130bn intended to help keep it afloat until 2014.

Germany is having to pay more than any other country for the package - angering many German citizens and politicians.

Despite the measures, some analysts fear Greece might need even more help.

@skaldazghira Thanks, prophet of the doom. You don't even have to tell us how you voted in the EU referendum.

Murky can oppose it as much as she likes because that is exactly what is going to happen. Greece will exit the euro to be followed by Spain, Portugal, Italy and the rest of the eurozone countries to be followed by the elimination of the EU itself. You and Sharko have lost your battle to save the German and French banks and the Maltese people should stop their politicians from giving any guarantees to the EU or anyone else. They made their mistakes and they have to pay for them.

Of course it would oppose; the German banks would not get their lent money back if Greece calls it a day!.
