Mobile phone networks were cut off and transport halted by strong winds and rain which struck Japan leaving four dead and several injured.

Weather officials believed the storm was the biggest in decades and warned those residing on the central Sea of Japan coast and in the north to remain alert.

Gusts and high waves were predicted by officials and more than 200,000 homes in northern Japan were still without electricity on Wednesday.

Officials said that a powerful low-pressure system moved across the country on Tuesday with gales in some areas reaching 156 km/hour.

Advisories and warnings have been issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency after the latest victim, a 28-year-old woman, was found dead under an uprooted tree.
