A journalist was authorised by Sky news to hack into emails of John Darwin, a canoeist who faked his own death.

Hacking the emails was considered to be in the public interest and the evidence discovered by the broadcaster was then handed over to the police.

The evidence was then used to successfully prosecute Darwin’s wife, Anne, for insurance and pension fraud.

The 61-year-old canoeist faked his own death in 2002 so hundreds of thousands of pounds could be claimed by his 60-year-old wife from pension schemes and insurance policies.

Correspondent Gerard Tubb hacked into Darwin’s Yahoo! email account, with authorisation from former Sky News managing editor Simon Cole and discovered email correspondence between Darwin and his wife.

While claiming during her criminal trial that her husband had forced her to go through with the fraud plan, the messages showed otherwise.

Both were jailed in 2008 for the crime which fooled the police, a coroner, financial institutions as well as their sons Mark and Anthony.

So now a criminal act is lawful to uncover another criminal act. This only means that the law system is failing.

How can someone "authorise" anybody to commit a criminal act? If Sky News had suspicions, the proper course of action would have been to inform the police who would have obtained the proper authority from a court to access these emails. This is just another attempt by the Murdoch empire to justify its vile practices.
