Aung San Suu Kyi to leave Burma after 24 years for overseas visit
Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s pro-democracy leader, is to travel abroad for the first time in 24 years.
Officials said that Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to travel abroad for the first time in almost a quarter of a century.
Suu Kyi had previously feared she would not be allowed to return to Burma should she leave and so refused to leave the country for 24 years.
She is expected to visit Norway in June according to the country’s foreign ministry.
While Burma was ruled by a military junta, Suu Kyi spent years under house arrest but the country has since embarked on a reformation process under the new civilian government.
