Al-Arabiya reporter ‘blasted’ over false Qatar coup tweets while Emir was in Malta

UPDATED | Al-Arabiya junior correspondent Mohammed Saud Jamal has come under fire over tweets he sent out last night, reporting a ‘failed coup’ on Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani who had just returned to Doha from a State Visit to Malta.

The junior reporter had tweeted that a coup was underway headed by military general Hamed Bin Ali al-Atiya, and subsequently reported a violent shoot-out between soldiers loyal to the General and the "US-Qatari forces" around the Royal Palace.

Mohammed Saud Jamal suddenly poured cold water on his tweets which ignited the Gulf shortly after midnight, excusing himself with the Qataris saying that the "reports were completely false."

The tweets however were picked up by al-Arabiya, which carried the news from its correspondent's tweets, but later removed it.

Jamal's tweets were however picked up by Iranian State media, which spiralled the story and kept the news rolling until this afternoon, creating further speculation over the alleged incidents.

Iran's Fars News Agency reported that Qatar is experiencing "critical conditions" after it was the scene of a coup attempt against Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani whilst on a State Visit to Malta yesterday.

It seems that everyone who meets with Dr Lawrence Gonzi is destined to go through a spell of bad luck . The last one was Col.Gaddafi ,and look what happened to him . If I was Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani I will keep a talisman in my pocket.

Now you have to ask yourself why that reporter would just make something like that up. More likely the attempt did occur while the Emir was absent from the country and now it has been successfully hushed up. Do you really think the Qatari's would report an incident like that to the press? Don't forget, there is no freedom of the press in Qatar. Preventing 'Loss of Face' is far more important to these people than acknowledging the truth.

there is no smoke without a fire no matter how much water or oil is poured on tweets. after all it is a known secret that all is not well between the two kingdoms

Report must have had his training at the Nationalist's Media Center or AZAD.
