US military condemn photos of troops posing with corpses
US military officials condemn photos of soldiers posing with the corpses of Afghan insurgents calling it a violation of US values.
US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said that photos published by the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday depicting US soldiers posing with the bodies of suspected Afghan insurgents, violated US regulations and values.
Panetta added that the two published photos did not represent the majority of men and women in uniform.
The photos were among 18 provided by a US soldier who was attempting to attract attention to the breakdown in leadership and discipline within the military which posed a safety risk.
A military investigation into the case is currently underway and Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen considered the images an isolated event.
In a statement, Nato’s International Security Assistance Force said that the photos taken in 2010 represented several soldiers who had acted out of ‘ignorance and unfamiliarity’ with US Army values.
One of the photos published showed a member of the US military posing with the body of an Afghan insurgent killed when planting a roadside bomb.
The second depicts a group of people, some of which are American soldiers and Afghan police, posing with legs from a corpse with one US soldier smiling giving a thumbs up.
