At least 11 protesters killed in Egypt
At least 11 people are killed during an attack on a sit-in protest this morning causing five presidential candidates in Egypt to suspend their campaigns to protest the deaths.
Five presidential candidates have suspended their electoral campaigns to protest the death of at least 11 people who were killed an attack was made on people during a sit-in protest near Egypt’s Ministry of Defence this morning.
The upcoming presidential election was thrown into alarm due to the suspension of the five candidates’ campaign.
Gunfire, clubs and knives were used to kill the victims which included a third-year medical student from Luxor and a number of men from Abbasiya in Cairo.
Doctors said that the fighting went on for hours in this neighbourhood without authorities intervening.
Opposing sides of the fight hurled stones and incendiary devices and the residential neighbourhood quickly became a war zone.
Security services made an appearance at around 1pm and the fighting stopped but the event cast a shadow over upcoming elections with a greater divide being created between Egypt’s military rules and protesters.
