Pakistani officials said that at least nine suspected militants were killed by a US drone strike on a militant compound in north-west Pakistan.

The area is considered to be a volatile tribal area and a possible hub of Taliban cross-border insurgent activity.

Such attacks have previously been met by complaints by Pakistan as a violation to its sovereignty.

The compound, being used by militants as a training centre, was completely destroyed in the strike according to security officials in North Waziristan.

Hundreds of people have been killed by similar US individual drone operations in the year but in January, US President Barack Obama confirmed that militants on Pakistani soil were the primary targets of the cover programme.

John Brennan, President Obama’s counter-terrorism adviser, said that the attacks were helping to win the war on the militant network but conceded that civilian deaths had occurred because of some strikes which have increased in frequency since Obama took office in 2008.
