Following failed bids by the leaders of the centre-right New Democracy and radical left Syriza bloc, leader of Pasok Evangelos Venizelos will attempt a third effort to create a coalition government in Greece.

These attempts will be conducted in the midst of political conflict resulting from Sunday’s elections which revealed a country in disagreement over plans to escape from the debt crisis.

Due to being associated with unpopular austerity cutbacks and allegations of corruption, Pasok is considered to be tainted.

But, former finance minister Venizelos will be meeting with President Karolos Papoulias to receive authorisation to attempt the formation of a government.

The once-dominant parties have largely become distrusted by the people after financial chaos which caused huge social unrest in Greece.

New austerity measures worth €14.5 billion are due to passed in Athens next month under the bailout agreement. These will be the first set of cuts passed to qualify for bailouts worth a total of €240 billion.
