US official says G8 leaders united on Iran and Syria situation
Group of Eight leaders agree that Iran needs to disclose more information regarding its nuclear ambitions and more attention needs to paid to Syria’s political transition.
A US official said that during initial discussions, Group of Eight leaders agreed that more information needs to be disclosed about Iran’s nuclear ambitions and more focus needed to be placed on Syria’s political transition.
Newly elected French President Francois Hollande and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev were among the leaders who stressed that international norms on nuclear issues needed to be adhered to by North Korea.
The leaders said that North Korea could face further isolation if it continues to ignore these norms.
The G8 dinner meeting hosted by US President Barack Obama at Camp David in Maryland on Friday evening was the leaders’ first opportunity to discuss global security concerns.
Further discussions on Saturday will include topics such as the euro zone crisis and oil market pressures among other economic issues.
