Eleven Lebanese Shiite pilgrims were kidnapped by a previously unknown Syrian rebel group on 22 May as they were crossing into Syria from Turkey.

The Syrian Rebels in Aleppo group said that the hostages were in good health and photographs were included with a statement obtained by Al-Jazeera TV.

The photographs were of the hostages and their passports but the authenticity of the statement could not be verified as Al-Jazeer did not say how it was obtained.

The five hostages were claimed to be members of the militant Hezbollah group and the rebel group demanded an apology from Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah for announcing that his group’s pro-Syrian position would remain unchanged.

Up to 800 rebel fighters were blamed on Syria for the massacre in central Syria which took the lives of more than 100 people, almost half were children.
