Canadian murder suspect arrested in Berlin
Police in Berlin have arrested the Canadian porn actor wanted for the murder and dismemberment of his lover.
A 29-year-old Canadian porn actor, accused of videotaping a killing and mailing body parts to the country's top political parties, has been arrested in Germany, officials in both countries said.
Luka Rocco Magnotta was apprehended on Monday in an internet cafe in Berlin after a person recognised him and alerted police, Berlin police spokeswoman Kerstin Ziesmer said.
Magnotta is wanted by Canadian authorities on first-degree murder and other charges. He is suspected of killing Jun Lin - a 33-year-old Chinese university student he dated - and mailing the victim's body parts to Canadian political parties.
Julie Di Mambro, a spokesperson for Canada's Department of Justice, said that Canada has to now submit a formal request for his extradition accompanied by documentation outlining the evidence supporting the request.
"Officers arrested him on the site, he did not put up any resistance," Ziesmer said. "He says he is the wanted person," she added, while cautioning that his identity must still be independently confirmed by German authorities.
The suspect is now being questioned, and will be brought before a judge behind closed-doors who will read out the international arrest warrant later, she said.
Interpol has placed Magnotta, who was last believed to be in Paris, on the equivalent of its most-wanted list.
Canadian police suspect Magnotta filmed the killing. The video, posted online, shows a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up. The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man's throat. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it.
Montreal police announced Magnotta was their suspect in the dismemberment case shortly after a headless torso was found near his flat.
Authorities believe the foot and hand sent through the post also belonged to Jun Lin.
The foot was sent to the HQ of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative Party in Ottawa on 29 May. The hand was found later that day in a parcel addressed to the office of the Liberal Party in Canada's capital.
Magnotta left Montreal on an international flight on 26 May.
The crime scene inside his flat was reported to be among the worst city police had ever seen, including a bloody mattress and pools of blood on the floor and in the refrigerator.
