Political leaders in New York are up in arms after Egypt's newly elected president, Mohammed Morsi, promised to free a terrorist linked with the bombing of the World Trade Centre in 1993.

This same terrorist was also later involved with the plot to blow up several other New York City landmarks.

Speaking to supporters in Tahrir Square, Morsi said he wanted convicted Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman to be released from a United States prison where he is serving a life sentence for his involvement in attempting to blow up several targets in the 1990s, including the United Nations.

This announcement was lambasted by New York politicians on Friday who said Morsi's statements were offensive and insulting to the memory of World Trade Centre victims and Rahman should remain "in jail for the rest of his life".

If Abdel Rahman is doing time in the US for committing crimes on US territory, then there is not a lot this Egyptian can do about it.
