At least 22 people were killed and 40 wounded at a wedding reception in northern Afghanistan by a suicide bomber today.

The dead includes a prominent politician and influential Afghan lawmaker Ahmad Khan Samangani who was hosting the party.

This attack is said to be the most lethal in Afghanistan for months and provincial governor Khairullah Anosh said it was Samangani’s daughter’s wedding.

Responsibility for the attack has not been resumed by Taliban who said that Samangani was notoriously and numerous people may have had problems with him.

Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since the Islamist Taliban government was ousted by US-led Afghan forces more than 10 years ago.

Dozens of suicide attacks this year have been carried out by Taliban rebels against President Hamid Karzai’s government which is supported by the West.
