Fourteen Chinese activists who were detained after some landed on an uninhabited island claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing will be deported back to China by Japan.

The Japanese government said the move could ease tension between the two countries.

A boat was used by the activists to land on the uninhabited islands of Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China which lie near possible rich gas reserves.

Beijing repeatedly issued demands for the activists’ immediate release.

The potentially rich gas reserves has caused a long ongoing quarrel between the two countries and has increased tension between Japan with China and South Korea after nearly 70 years after the end of World War II.

Chinese media reported that all 14 activists will be returned to Hong Kong by no later than Friday evening after Japanese police handed them over to immigration authorities.
