World champion cyclist may risk seven titles
Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and cancer survivor may risk losing his titles after announcing that he will not fight doping charges by USADA.
Announcing that he will no longer continue to fight doping charges by the US Anti-Doping Agency, seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong could be stripped of his titles.
The cyclist could also be banned from competitive cycling.
In a written statement, the cancer survivor said that he had “had enough” and wanted to live his life after have to deal with claims that he cheated and had an unfair advantage since 1999 when winning his seven Tours.
Annie Skinner, a spokesperson for the USADA, said that Armstrong would be stripped of his titles and banned from professional cycling for life by the USADA.
The USADA’s CEO hoped that this would set an example for future sporting generations to compete without the use of performance-enhancing.
Should Armstrong be stripped of his titles, he would become one of the highest-profile athletes to face such a sanction.
Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson faced a similar sanction in 1998 after being disqualified from the Seoul Olympics after winning the gold medal in the 100m race.
Armstrong said that he would like to put allegations to rest but did not want to participate in the USADA process since it is unfair considering he has never failed a doping test.
