Two American diplomats and two Pakistani US consular staff were saved by Pakistani security forces when their armoured vehicle was attacked by a suicide car-bomber in Peshawar, a city in the northwest of Pakistan.

Although the security forces’ quick action saved the lives of these high ranking officials, four Pakistanis were killed while 19 other local residents were injured.

Leaving the US Consulate in Peshawar, the US government vehicle was travelling through an area of the city when an explosives-laden car rammed into it.

A US official in Islamabad said the injuries incurred by the Americans were not life-threatening but the suicide attack renewed concerns about the safety of Westerners working in Pakistan, particularly around north-western tribal areas concentrated with militants.

Responsibility for the attack has not been claimed by any groups but al Qaeda allies, Pakistani Taliban, have previously pledged to kill foreign nationals and Pakistanis supporting the government and US –led war against Afghanistan’s Taliban.
