At least two US marines were killed when Taliban militants breached Nato’s Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

The Taliban told the BBC that this was revenge for mocking Islam in a film made by a US cleric.

Nato said that a clearance operation is underway at the huge base in Helmand province after aircraft and buildings were damaged in the attack.

Protests against Western embassies have been increasing in violence and have swept across the Muslim world in anger against the video, Innocence of Muslims, since Tuesday in Egypt.

The death toll rose to seven on Friday as violent protest continued in Khartoum, Tunis and Cairo.
