Syria’s official news agency reported two huge explosions in the heart of Damascus this morning close to the army and air force command headquarters. A fire was also reported in the area.

The explosions were caused by two roadside bombs according to Information Minister Omran Zoubi who added that one of these may have been triggered inside the grounds of the army command headquarters.

The bombs went off just before 7am local time within minutes of each other but the damage was superficial as windows of nearby buildings shattered.

The area was sealed off to traffic and ambulances rushed to the site but deaths and injuries have not yet been reported.

Gunfire followed the explosions this morning according to witnesses allowing the possibility of a clash between security forces and gunmen in the high security area.
