24-hour strike called by trade unions in Greece
Two trade unions representing half the workforce in Greece have called on workers to strike for 24 hours in protest of austerity measures.
The first general strike since the conservative-led coalition government came in to power has been called by trade unions in Greece.
New planned spending cuts of more than €11.5 billion will be protested against during today’s 24-hour walkout. Anti-austerity demonstrations have also planned.
Workers ranging from doctors to air traffic controllers and numerous other sectors are taking part in the walkout which was called by the country’s largest two unions representing half the entire workforce.
Should Greece fail to make cutbacks to satisfy the pre-condition to receive its next tranche of bailout funds, bankruptcy could be faced within weeks.
Record unemployment and poverty has been causing strong resistance to further cuts as Greece attempts to prepare for the next €31 billion international bailout.
Raising the retirement age to 67 and slashed pensions have also proposed by the Greek government.
