US to ease import ban on Burma
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the US is to ease on its import ban on goods from Burma to provide more opportunities to the Burmese to sell to the US Market
The United States said it would be easing its import ban on goods from Burma which has been a key part of remaining US sanctions.
This was announced at the United Nations General Assembly by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during talks with Burmese President Thein Sein.
Clinton hoped this ease on the ban would allow the Burmese people to have more opportunities to sell to the US market and the positive move was appreciated by Sein.
This ease on the ban is intended to recognise the continued progress in Burma toward a reform.
According to a powerful figure who recently had US sanctions against him lifted, the government intended to create a multi-party democratic system and market economy.
Under the administration of President Thein Sein, numerous political prisoners have been freed and censorship eased in the country.
The opposition led by Aung San Suu Kyi now also forms part of the political process holding a handful of seats in parliament.
