At least 36 people were killed after two passenger boats collided off the shore of a Hong Kong island.

Rescue workers continue to search for survivors after what has been considered to be the territory’s worst ferry accident in recent memory which occurred on Monday evening.

Hong Kong’s waters were busier and more crowded than usual as the city celebrated China’s National Day.

One of the ferries involved in the collision belonged to The Hong Kong Electric Company and was carrying employees and their families to watch the fireworks display.

It then crashed into a passenger ferry travelling from Hong Kong Island to Lamma Island.

The incident, which took place around 8:20pm, threw more than 100 people into the water with great force.

The Hong Kong Electric vessel began to sink rapidly after the impact and obstacles on board made it very difficult for rescuers to carry out their duties.

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) said it managed to pull 123 people out of the water using its rescue boats, 28 people were announced dead at the scene while eight others died upon arrival at the hospital.
