After five Turkish nationals were killed by shells from across the border of Syria, Turkish artillery renewed firing at targets in the neighbouring country, killing several Syrian troops.

A woman and three children were killed in Turkey’s border town of Akcakala after it was shelled by Syrian government forces on Wednesday.

Syria’s actions are scheduled to be condemned by the UN Security Council and Turkey’s aggressive response marks the first time that it has fired into Syria during the 18-month-long unrest.

Turkish envoy to the UN Ertugrul Apakan submitted a request to the UN Security Council for “necessary action” to be taken to stop Syrian “aggression”.

The request was made in a letter to the current president of the UN 15-member Council, Guatemalan ambassador Gert Rosenthal.
