A 14-year-old girl is in recovery after being shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in the Swat Valley of Pakistan.

Surgeons in Pakistan said they were successful in removing the bullet from Malala Yousafzai’s head and the girl is now in a stable condition.

Yousafzai, a campaigner for girls’ rights, along with two other girls was attacked by gunmen as they were walking home from school on Tuesday.

Politicians, activists and the public heavily condemned the act but militants said that she was targeted for promoting secularism.

Should Yousafzai fully recuperate from surgery, a spokesman for the Islamist militant group said she would not be spared.

The 14-year-old had made it into public attention in 2009 after writing a diary for BBC Urdu describing life under Taliban militants who had taken over the Swat Valley in late 2007.
