Lebanese efforts to form a new coalition is being supported by the United States as tensions increase following the death of security chief Wissam al-Hassan.

Warning that a power vacuum could pose a threat to Lebanese political stability, the US department spokeswoman Victoria Nulan said that more is required as instability transfers from Syria.

Syria was blamed by opposition figures for the attack on Gen Hassan as deadly clashes erupted in Beirut and Tripoli.

"We support the efforts of President Michel Suleiman and other responsible leaders in Lebanon to build an effective government and to take the necessary next steps in the wake of the terrorist attack," Nuland said.

During talks held in Beirut with President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Tuesday, EU foreign policy chief Catherin Ashton  warned of the dangers of a political vacuum while welcoming efforts to maintain stability.

Attempts to calm conflict between pro and anti Syrian factions are being made by the Lebanese army which has now been deployed.

Head of the intelligence branch of the Internal Security Forces Gen Hasssan was killed by a car bomb blast on Friday together with one of his bodyguards and a woman. His death is believed to have sparked the fatal conflicts between opposing factions.
