National Hurricane Centre in US says Hurricane Sandy hit Cuba after sweeping through Jamaica which left at least one man reported dead.
The US-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that Hurricane Sandy hit land just west of Santiago de Cuba strengthening into a category two hurricane.
Jamaican journalists reported fears that some people remain trapped after Sandy swept through Jamaica on Wednesday, also killing one elderly man who was crushed by falling boulders on his way home.
Winds sustained reached a maximum of 110mph to 114mph as Sandy struck south west Cuba.
A hurricane watch has been set up in the Bahamas, and Florida has been placed on tropical storm watch.
The NHC said heavy rain could also be carried along with the hurricane potentially producing life-threatening floods and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas.
Around 1,700 people have been evacuated from Cuba as a precaution according to local officials.
More than 1,000 persons sought refuge in shelters in Jamaica with reports made of widespread power outages, flooded streets and infrastructural damages.
