Finland has the best education system in the world, according to a report titled 'The Learning Curve', written by the Economist Intelligence Unit and published by Pearson this month.

After Finland, South Korea ranked second, while Japan and Singapore were ranked third and fourth respectively.

Among EU countries, the UK took the top spot in terms of quality education systems.

The ranking was based on data from international tests, school literacy and graduation rates, and the report sought to increase the understanding of what factors lead to successful educational outcomes.

"Although they may not be able to quantify it, governments in most countries recognise a link between the knowledge and skills with which young people enter the workforce and long-term economic competitiveness," the report said,

"This report is aimed at helping policymakers, educators, academics and other specialists to identify some of these factors," it added.

The report notes that one of the key ingredients for the formation of a successful education system "is for everybody to be committed and to understand that they are doing a public good".

Education authorities please take careful note and try to emulate. In Finland they do not start school proper before the age of 6 or 7. In Malta they start giving them homework at 3. Something is terribly wrong.

With all the boasting one would have thought that Malta would have ranked with the first 20 or so but we did not even make it with the first 40 with even South Korea beating us.
