Christians round the world celebrate Easter Sunday

Pope Francis to celebrate Easter Mass and deliver his ‘Urbi et Orbi’ speech at noon.

Christians round the world today celebrate Easter, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The eyes of the faithful will be turned to the Vatican where the new pope, selected just this month, presides over a series of Holy Week events.
The pontiff has lead the Easter Vigil service late yesterday evening and will deliver his holiday address and traditional blessing today. Christians from all over the world have flocked to Italy during the Holy Week with hopes of seeing the first Latin American pope.

He will deliver his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, Latin for "to the city and the world." Usually the pope also issues Easter greetings in dozens of languages.
Pope Francis has signaled a new era of humility and service for the Roman Catholic church, rattled by scandal and allegations of internal conflict in recent years.

On Thursday, the pontiff washed the feet of 12 inmates of a juvenile detention center in Rome, and on Friday he began the evening mass at the Vatican by prostrating himself in front of the altar.

But Christian pilgrims from around the globe were also marking Easter Sunday in Jerusalem, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his crucifixion.
Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the highest-ranking Roman Catholic representative in the Holy Land, was scheduled to lead the morning Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in the Christian Quarter of the walled, historic Old City of Jerusalem.
