Tourists shot at base camp
Nine tourists and a guide killed in the middle of the night by Sunni militant group at a base camp hotel.
Nine tourists and a Pakistani guide lost their lives when gunmen stormed a hotel in northern Pakistan. Report say five tourists are from Ukraine, one from Russia and three from China.
Sunni militant group Jundullah claimed responsibility of the attack at the base camp of Nanga Parbat. The mountain in Gilgit-Baltistan is the world's ninth highest. The city of Gilgit is the doorway to the Himalayas.
The Gilgit-Baltistan territory was considered as one of the safe areas under Pakistani control. The attack will have severe repercussions on the country's ailing tourism industry.
The incident happened after midnight when gunmen dressed as police officers entered the hotel. Unconfirmed reports claim the gunmen took the tourists' money and passports then shoot them.
The Diamer district had been sealed off and police have launched a search for the attackers.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack saying "such acts of cruelty and inhumanity" would not be tolerated.
