30 dead in Nigerian school shooting
29 students and a teacher die in a Nigerian school after gunmen storm the building.
29 students and a teacher were shot dead as gunmen stormed a school in Nigeria in the early hours of Saturday morning. Others were critically injured in the attack.
The school buildings were set ablaze and students shot at as the attackers fled. A number of pupils were burned alive while others ran into the nearby woods. Their fate is still unknown.
The school lies in Nigeria's northeast state Yobe. Earlier this month Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency. Nigerian troops were sent to the region to impede the creation of a breakaway state.
This was the second attack on a Nigerian school in the same state since June. Seven students and two teachers had lost their lives in the June attack. Terrorist group Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for the attack. The groups name means 'western education is sacrilege'.
No one has claimed to be behind Saturday's shooting. Nigerian authorities have launched an investigation to find the attackers.
