Pilgrims pack Copacabana Beach
Pope Francis addresses millions during World Youth Day celebrations in Brazil
Pope Francis was greeted by around three million people on Brazil's Copacabana Beach for an all-night vigil.
Addressing the faithful, from a simulated church structure, the Pope spoke against being part-time Christians and urged those present to lead full, meaningful lives. As the pope's vehicle made its way to the stage, pilgrims filled the rear seats with football shirts, flags and flowers.
The pontiff mentioned the protests all over Brazil and described the young people in the streets as the bringers of change. He pleaded with believers to overcome apathy and offer a Christian response to social and political concerns.
In a meeting with over 1000 bishops and clerics in Rio's cathedral, Pope Francis challenged clerics to leave the safety of their parishes and take to the streets, particularly the favelas to spread the word of God.
The Pope, will conclude his first overseas trip as pontiff later today.
