Tunisians take to the streets demanding a new government

Thousands of protesters called for Tunisia’s Islamist-led government to quit on Tuesday night in the largest opposition rally since the country’s political crisis began two weeks ago.

Earlier, the head of the Constituent Assembly which is working on a new constitution suspended the body until the government and its critics hold talks.

But one opposition member said the struggle would go on: “We will continue the struggle and we will continue the pressure on the Islamist party, whatever their project is. This is a call to occupy the streets in all the regions”

Tuesday’s demonstration also marked the six-month anniversary of the assassination of one of two leading opposition figures.

With Tunisia facing its worst political turmoil since the Arab Spring, the crisis has been compounded by Islamist militants who have stepped up attacks. Last night another of their number was shot dead by police.
