Italy diverts Maltese tanker to rescue migrants

Italy diverts additional commercial ships, including Maltese registered tanker, to rescue migrants at sea.

The Maltese registered tanker Patroclus rescued a group of approximately 97 migrants south of Lampedusa.

The Italian news agency AGI reported that Italian search and rescue authorities yesterday diverted two commercial ships, the Patroclus, a Maltese oil tanker, and the Cdry White, an Italian cargo ship, to assist with the rescue of two groups of migrants.

The first group of approximately 76 migrants was rescued about 40 miles from Tripoli by an Italian coastguard vessel; the group was then transferred to the Cdry White.

The Patroclus appears to have directly rescued a group of approximately 97 migrants south of Lampedusa.

AGI reported that the two commercial ships are sailing to Trapani and Pozzallo in Sicily to disembark the rescued migrants.

Dear pacam had you seen Rai News you would have probably agreed with me. Probably because you and your shattered party would cling at a straw to gain some of your lost support. Whatever happened the reality is that thanks to the feet stamping of Peppi ta' Burmarrad these ships never dared enter our territorial waters. And that is what matters for the huge majority of the Maltese people. I can assure you that had your grocer man Busuttil been in power , he would have cowered in some corner and accepted the shiploads of illegal immigrants immediately. Better feet stamping than cowering (ref to Franco Debono challenging Busuttil at the WE studios.) Any mention of Antoine Vella please ? He must be cowering like your leader as well. No bocci tal-laham.

@Tony Fava. As if Italy was afraid that Peppi ta' Burmarrad would again stamp his feet and so preferred to divert the tankers to Italian ports. Illegal immigrants were nearer to Lampedusa and so they had to be taken to the nearest safe Italian ports.

Salvino Giusti Apparently Europe is happy with its eventual annexation with the African continent. Ghaddafi is clapping in his grave. His dream is turning into reality.

Bring all the experts. All that ends well, sometimes but not always, may also end well. Dr. Muscat gave strong signals, post-saga, that whatever the commissioner, let alone the experts and media, say, such ships picking migrants from the Libyan SAR will never enter Malta.

If the UNHCR is to be credible regarding its concern about the wellbeing of this illegal migration of africans to europe, it must establish its offices in Libya and operate from there. Otherwise it will be perceived to be responsible for the danger and possibly loss of life, these people may be exposed to.

Antoine Vella, pacam and other Busuttilpn bloggers for your attention and comments please.
