Protestors clash with police in Brazil

Demonstrations for an increase in teachers’ wages end in violence

The Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo were home to violent protests between teachers and police, yesterday evening.

The demonstrations took place as thousands of teachers - who have been demanding a salary increase for the past two months - took to the streets to make their voice heard.

The protests are believed to have begun in a peaceful manner but the situation turned ugly as a few of the protesters threw firebombs at public buildings, whilst riot police responded with tear gas.

Brazil’s security situation is already under scrutiny with the football World Cup set to take place in less than a year’s time.
