Mount Etna erupts
Airspace temporarily closed, re-opened after a few hours
Sicily's Mount Etna erupted today, sending a towering plume of ash visible in much of eastern Sicily.
Etna is Europe's most active volcano but its last major eruption occurred in 1992.
The eruption forced the closure of nearby airspace before dawn, but authorities lifted the order in early morning, according to Catania airport.
Authorities said that evacuations from nearby villages were not necessary.
