Earth witnesses rare eclipse

A hybrid eclipse is witnessed across Africa, Europe and America through Sunday's afternoon.

Africa, Europe and the United States, today witnessed a rare solar eclipse of the Sun, which is totally or partially blocked out by the Moon.

The total eclipse was first viewed from central Gabon for about one minute at about 1350 GMT. The eclipse then spread east across Africa with partial views noticed in eastern North America and southern Europe.

This solar eclipse is considered a rare occurrence as it switched between an annular and total eclipse. During a total eclipse, the sun is totally covered by the Moon. However in an annular eclipse the Moon fails to block the Sun completely, leaving a sunlit halo visible around the Moon.
