Britain is bracing itself for more stormy weather, with forecasters warning of 90 mph gale-force winds and heavy showers across southern England and Wales.

The weather has dampened Christmas celebrations across the country with thousands left without power while many were evacuated due to flooding.

"Stormy weather is expected the continue through the week. There could be significant disruption across Southern England while heavy showers may worsen the flooding," the Environment Agency warned.

The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings, indicating "severe or hazardous weather" with potential to "cause danger to life or widespread disruption".

There are 56 flood warnings and 144 flood alerts across England and WalesThousands spent Christmas day without power while many were evacuated due to flooding.

Emergency officials said around 90 people were evacuated from their homes on Christmas Day while 11 more were evacuated due to floods on Boxing Day.

More than a thousand homes have been flooded across the south of England while around 10,000 homes have been left without electricity, with engineers saying some may not be reconnected until the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport chiefs could face an investigation over power failures that left hundreds of passengers stranded, as Britain braces itself for more bad weather.  The airport's North Terminal saw chaotic scenes on Christmas Eve after a fire triggered a power outage, leaving people unable to check-in for their flights.

The chaos saw the airport cancel numerous flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded over the festive period.

Those affected complained of a lack of information about four hour delays as more than 35 flights were cancelled - just two months after the Airport was affected by another storm.
