The head of the Labour delegation in the Euopean Parliament, Joseph Cuschieri, has united with other members of the EP urging the European Commisision to reconsider the transfering and processing of Syrian chemical weapons in the Mediterranean Sea.

The transfer of the weapons from a Danish ship to a specialised American processing vessel is due to take place off the port of Gioia Tauro, south of Italy.

Whilst the MEPs said that they agreed with the removal of the chemical weapons from Syria, they argued that they should not be transferred and processed in an enclosed Sea like the Mediterranean.

Doing so, they said, could seriously endanger the environment of Mediterranean countries, including Malta.
