Allies pound Gaddafi's military

Allied forces engaged in the enforcement of a UN mandated no-fly zone over Libya, last night carried out a series of aerial bombings around Tripoli, Benghazi and Sirte.

The bombings targeted radar and military installations.

In Tripoli, Gaddafi’s compound was rocked by a number of blasts for a second consecutive night, while more missiles targeted his southern strongholds and a navy base bombed as international criticism mounted over the air assault on Libya.

But the coalition effort is showing signs of stress as Italy and France engaged in a diplomatic spat over who is to take the command of the Libya no-fly zone.

Italy has insisted that the command must be coordinated by NATO while also stressing that the no-fly zone must not mean war on Gaddafi.

The spat led to Norway suspending its participation in the coalition force, pending clarifications on the command, while US President Barack Obama has assured the coalition partners that the US will “shortly” be handing over the command to NATO.
