Two killed in demonstrations over US Koran burning
More than 2,000 people demonstrated in Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, over the burning of a Koran in the United States. Reportedly, the demonstration has left two Afghans dead.
Today’s protest follows the death of seven UN foreign staff who were killed during similar protests in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
In Kandahar police fired into the air to try to prevent the crowd from marching towards the UN offices and provincial administration headquarters.
An AFP reporter says the protesters have split into two groups, with one marching over to the UN office and the other marching toward the governor’s office.
“Both have been blocked by police,” he said. The reporters also said the mob beat up one Afghan photo journalist and broke his camera.
The demonstrators, all men, were shouting "Death to US" and "Death to (President Hamid) Karzai, he added. "They have insulted our Koran," one protester shouted. Police did not allow reporters to speak to the demonstrators.
